A PREFERENCE FOR DIRECT ELECTION
The best chance of Australia becoming a republic is if the model put to a referendum gives all Australian voters the chance to directly elect their Head of State. Their preference for a genuinely directly Head of State has been clear ever since before the failed 1999 referendum.
THE IRISH PROVE IT WORKS
Ireland is a republic with a Westminster-style system of parliamentary democracy as well as having a Head of State elected directly by the Irish people. This background note is based on personal discussions the chair of the Real Republic Australia, David Muir, had with informed observers in Ireland. It shows how a directly elected Head of State can work effectively alongside an executive government led by a Prime Minister.
